Tiger On The Prowl

Did one local dailies put it aptly when the news headline said, “Tiger Back In the Prowl” ? The papers were referring to Woods optimism after charging one shot clear in the first round of Chevron World Golf Challenge, as he continues to seek a break-through.

When asked on Thursday if he is back to his best after a series of dismay performance since his private life got the world’s attention, Woods replied: “It’s a process.”

Woods, whose last tournament victory was at the 2009 Australian Masters, further added, “I was putting together streaks of holes – two, three, five holes of this – and then I’d lose it for a little bit. I needed to get to a full round and then eventually a full tournament. Today was a full round, so that’s a good start.”

Let’s hope he gets his first golf victory before year 2010 comes to a close ;-)

Ryder Cup 2010 | Tiger Woods Coached By Golf Instructor Sean Foley

Tiger Woods will be going into this year’s Ryder Cup as one of the four wild card picks on the 12-man team. Not to his liking; nevertheless, Woods insist that he will play and compete in Ryder 2010 with the same intensity as he has played in the Majors.

“Whether I was a person who was picked or a person who earned their way on the squad, it doesn’t change the overall goal. It’s still the same and that’s to go over there and win,” he said.

Only time will tell whether Woods, who is currently being coached by golf instructor Sean Foley, will give a better show at next month’s Ryder Cup.

His game seems to be improving as he continues to work on his golf swing and mental condition – finishing joint 11th at last week’s Deutsche Bank Championship. “I’m pleased at the progress I’ve made in my game working with Sean,” he told the press.

Anyway, let’s watch how he will fair at this weekend’s BMW Championship in Lemont, Illinois.

Recovery For Tiger Woods At Deutsche Bank Golf Tournament 2010

Further optimism is seen for Tiger Woods game, after regaining some form at the recent Barclays tournament to finish at a respectable 12th placing. He notched birdies on the second, fourth, sixth and seventh holes on Saturday, after a dreadful first day at the Deutsche Bank Championship 2010.

“To start off that way, that was nice,” he said. That, however, wasn’t the tone on the first day: Woods, who ranked 65th in the FedEx Cup standings, started to shoot a one-over 72, only ahead of five players in the 99-man golf tournament. “I just didn’t have it today,” he told the Press after the first round. But it’s not  just “today” – Wood’s game has been in the doldrums for quite a while: many people naturally felt that his domestic problems that led to his recent divorce from Swedish wife, Elin, were sapping his mental strength and thence his focus on the game.

Leading the golfers on 64 at the Deutsche Bank tournament were Australia’s Jason Day and American Zach Johnson. Day expressed that “everything kind of clicked” at this event, while the obviously delighted Johnson felt the good start will create the momentum for the rest of the golf tournament.

Barclays Golf 2010 Prize Money | Tiger Woods In Ridgewood Country Club

This year’s Barclays Golf is expected to be stiff. Held from August 26 to 29 in Ridgewood Country Club, Barclays will see Tiger Woods competing for a share of the prize money of $7.5 million. He is expected to qualify for the Playoffs even though his final standing is still dependent on this week’s results at Wyndham Championship. It will be Woods first time playing in Barclays at this venue.

First established in 1967, and initially known as Westchester Classic, the Barclays may also see Vijay Singh competing. The only four- time winner, Vijay Singh won the tournament in 1993, 1995, 2006 and 2008. Vijay is also the only golfer that won more than twice at this prestigious event.

The two-time winners are Jack Nicklaus (1967, 1972), Seve Ballesteros (1983, 1988), Ernie Els (1996, 1997), and Sergio Garcia (2001, 2004).

PGA Golf Championship 2010 Rain Challenge

Blame it on the weather - not when you are professional golfer playing in PGA Golf Championship 2010 and any Major event. Rain or shine, you brave it out.

You would understand that high humidity and rain decrease driving distance. And, wet and soft ground reduce roll and you may dig up more turf during the swing. Conversely, if the day is hot and air is thin [e.g. in high elevation golf courses], the ball tends to go further.

That’s about it – some general conclusions drawn from experience and observation about the elements.

It’s not easy to estimate impact of humidity, rain, temperature, wind conditions and air pressure on the flight of the golf ball. Golf ball manufacturers have tested various materials, design and core construction. Still, it is difficult to ensure with a high degree of certainty how each of the elements individually affects the ball’s flight and what exact technicalities should be applied.

Inevitably, players experience and judgement will be significant when playing under tough and unpredictable weather conditions. Prepared golfers do not panic or rush when the elements are not favorable; they play with the same calmness. They recognize that there is no apparent advantage anyone can extract from such circumstances – everyone should equally challenged by the environment.

As a professional golfer or an aspiring one, you should always go to the green prepared with golf rain gears like hooded rain suits, hats, gloves, umbrellas and cart cover. You would also have a waterproof cover for your golf bag to keep your clubs and accessories dry. There will also be extra towels.

Back to PGA Championship, can we conclude that all players are equally challenged? And the fact that up-and-coming players like Nick Watney, Rory Mcllroy and Dustin Johnson gaining prominence on the golf leaderboard has nothing to do with the elements?

2010 US PGA Championship Odds | Game Over For Tiger Woods

One cannot deny that these are agonizing times for Tiger Wood. Having plunged to greater depths during last week’s WGC Bridgestone Invitational, golf enthusiasts including his die-hard fans are wondering how he will fare in this week’s US PGA Championship 2010 in Whistling Straits.

2008 PGA champion, Padraig Harrington, believes that nobody is dominating at the moment. Is he inferring to a possible comeback by Woods? Perhaps. After all, who can deny that Woods, who has been the leading golfer of this generation and a 14-time Major winner, cannot reverse those winds of fortune? A lot of mental strength is required, for sure.

Regardless, the event in Whistling Straits is interesting to watch as ninety-seven of the world’s top golfers are competing. The watchword here is UNPREDICTABILITY.

WCG Bridgestone Invitational 2010 Prize Money | World Golf Championship Leaderboard

Is Tiger Woods, the champion of four of the recent five WCG Bridgestone championships, in danger of losing the number one position to fellow golfers Lee Westwood or Phil Mickelson? The stakes are high as it is not just the prize money of $8,500,000. Pride and status are intertwined in such high profile tournaments.

Pressure is surely mounting on Tiger Woods as he has not won a tournament since November. But the scales are still tipped in favor of Tiger Woods; afterall, he has one of the most illustrious career in the history of golf when he has been the leading player for the at 270 weeks and for an overall total of 612 weeks.

Regardless of the outcome, this year’s WCG Bridgestone Invitational should be exciting.

Centrifugal Force In The Golf Swing

Ever wondered why professional golfers like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Lee Westwood swing so easily, and yet generate so much power in their golf swing? The secret lies in their ability in controlling and harnessing the centrifugal force in the golf swing. That is done by increasing the centripetal force, i.e. pulling the club head, which, in turn, translates into faster golf head movement during the downward swing of the club.

Which Golf Ball For 90 – 100 mph Swing Speed

The average golf swing speed at the moment of impact is around 90 – 100 mph. At this speed, the golf ball leaves the tee at the speed of 130 – 150 mph.

As a rule of thumb, the harder the ball, the further the distance it will travel. Low compression balls have higher spin and give better control. Consistent with this, the primary consideration for golf ball selection is, whether you want more distance or more control, not swing speed. Thence, you should match your swing speed with the golf ball that gives you optimal distance or control.
The information you need is available on the back of the golf ball box. It will usually tabulate swing speed with the corresponding ball factor, i.e. desired amount of spin, distance and control. You match your swing speed to the ball that performs best with your swing.

If you are purchasing premium golf balls, these give you the best combination of control, spin and distance. You therefore need not be overly concern about matching swing speed with the ball.

Smooth Slow Golf Swing Tempo | Swing Speed Radar With Tempo Timer

A good golf swing is more than merely striking the ball hard and fast. Though it is true that the faster you swing, the harder you strike the ball, you need to swing the fastest at the moment the club impacts the ball. The beginning part of the swing should be at a slower tempo.

Going from slow to high speed requires acceleration at some point. That controlled pace or tempo requires practice so that you can execute this smoothly and yet keep your hands properly aligned. Light grip pressure is crucial to ensure slow tempo.

When you watch professional golfers execute a swing, you will observe that the entire motion is smooth and effortless. They are able to maintain control, and only increase speed just before they strike the ball. They never over-swing.

See this in the video below.

Golfers often use swing speed radar with tempo timer to optimize their swing speed to increase distance and to ensure swing consistency. The device measures to hundredth of a second the actual swing tempo time from the start of the club takeaway to ball impact. This useful and practical device can be used at home in the backyard and at the driving range. Golfers of all ages and skill levels use it to perfect their swing so that they attain the desired slow golf swing tempo.

Get Better At Golf

Ask any avid golfer what is their number one wish. The reply is [almost] universal – how to get better at golf to achieve lower scores. Its the same whether answer comes from the golfer is a junior or seasoned championship player.

When you ask a professional golfer for advice, you can be certain that the reply is inevitably – pay attention to your golf swing, putt, and use of equipment. And, you start pounding hundreds of golf balls....with little improvement.

Does it mean that the professionals got it wrong? Not likely.

What then is the secret to get better at golf?

The truth may somewhat be a surprise to you: recognize that golf is both a physical and a mental sport!

There are a number of ways to improve the physical aspect of the game – like perfecting the swing and putt. Techniques aside, a little appreciated but important physical aspect of getting better at golf is the condition of your body.

A supple body is crucial as you can naturally make smooth and bigger backswing with ease, enabling you to hit longer drives. Regular golf-specific exercises and simple stretches before a game are simple tips that everyone can adopt to get better at golf.

These routines will also improve your overall health so that you maintain a consistent and powerful swing throughout, not feeling tired as the game progress.

The next big secret for improving all aspects of golf is concerned with developing a strong mental game. Ability to stay calm and confident is particularly useful during the pre-putting stage where you need to analyze and visualize how the putt will play out before you actually putt! Getting this aspect of the game right will save many strokes and will lower the score of the game.

On the aspect of confidence, setting aside time daily to practice visualization, and getting into a state of mental readiness before the start of the golf game are just as crucial in getting better at golf.

Seeing how your golf game plays out in your mind creates a strong mental expectation that often translates into reality on the greens. This has been proven time and time again, even at world championship levels, that such techniques are critical for success in golf and for all sports.

How To Grip Golf Clubs

Tired of being a duffer? Get over it by learning how to grip golf clubs.

Watch the video below on gripping of golf clubs correctly.

You may observe that the correct grip involves holding the club with your left fingers, not in the palm, with your thumb pointing downwards. Place your right hand over the left, so that it is over your left thumb, always making sure that the V between your index fingers and right thumb is pointing upwards.

Another observable point is, the grip should not be too tight.
